“So… how much?” It’s the first question everybody asks a mechanic, and it’s the question most shops dance around. You get “we’d have to look at it,” or “starts at,” or a number that grows twice before the invoice prints. I’ve been turning wrenches in the Valley for ten years, and I think you deserve the real numbers up front, so here they are, including the ones that make other mechanics wince.
One thing first, because it changes all the math: a mobile mechanic isn’t a discount service, and isn’t a premium one either. You’re mostly not paying for a building: no bay rent, no front-desk staff, no lobby coffee, and that savings shows up in the numbers below. What you are paying for is the same thing a good shop charges for: an accurate diagnosis and work done once, correctly.
The Actual Price List
These are real numbers from my own rate card in 2026, not teaser rates, not “as low as” games. The range on some jobs is real too, and I’ll tell you exactly why in the next section.
| Job | What you’ll pay |
|---|---|
| Booking deposit | $50, comes off your final bill |
| Check-engine light diagnostic (first hour, real scan + analysis) | $125 + $45 trip ($170 within 20 miles) |
| Battery test and replacement (no-start fixed same visit in most cases) | $79 plus the battery, trip included within 20 miles |
| Brake pads (per axle) | from $150 labor, plus pads |
| Brake pads + rotors (per axle) | $200 labor, plus parts |
| Pre-purchase inspection (written report, same day) | $195, trip included within 20 miles |
| Oil change (up to 5 quarts full synthetic + filter) | $109, trip included within 20 miles |
| A/C diagnosis and repair | diagnosis first, then a written quote |
| Alternator / starter replacement | quoted by vehicle |
| Suspension work, tune-ups, electrical | diagnosis first, then a written quote |
That last column is the part people skip past and shouldn’t: on anything beyond a fixed-price job, you get a written quote before any work starts. Not a verbal ballpark that drifts. If the number changes mid-job because we found something real, the wrench stops and we talk first. That’s not a courtesy; it’s how I’ve worked for ten years.
Why Quotes Vary From Car to Car
Same job, different price, honest reasons:
- Parts cost what they cost. Rotors for a base sedan and rotors for a heavy-duty truck are different invoices. I quote the part that fits the vehicle, and I’ll show you the options when there are any worth discussing.
- Access time is real time. A battery that sits on top of the engine is a fifteen-minute job. A battery hidden under a fuse box and a brace (looking at you, German luxury) is not. You’re never billed for my learning curve, but access hours are hours.
- Phoenix heat is a multiplier. Rubber, plastic, and electronics out here live hard lives. A cooling hose that cooperates in Ohio snaps in half in a Scottsdale driveway in July. I plan for the heat; quotes here reflect what the work actually takes in this climate.
- Diagnosis first, always. Any honest “how much” starts with knowing what’s actually wrong. Guessing is how people end up paying for three parts they didn’t need.
What You Should Never Pay For
- The parts cannon. “Let’s replace the sensor, then the coil, then the module and see what sticks” is not diagnosis; it’s gambling with your wallet. A real diagnostic ($125 for the first hour) names the problem before parts move.
- A quote you can’t hold. If it isn’t written down before the work starts, it isn’t a quote. Walk.
- Mystery shop fees. If a line item on the invoice can’t be explained in one sentence, it shouldn’t be there.
- Paying twice for the same diagnosis. Bring me the problem, not a box of parts somebody sold you against a guess.
Mobile vs. Shop: The Math Nobody Does
Compare totals, not line items. A shop visit for a no-start means a tow ($75–$150 across this valley), a day off your schedule waiting in a lobby, and a ride to pick it up. A mobile visit means none of that: the van comes to your driveway or office lot, you keep your day, and the most common no-starts (battery, starter, alternator) are fixed on the spot.
Now add the number nobody puts on an invoice: your time. In Phoenix, “swing by the shop” is a two-hour errand with the driving. Mobile service deletes it.
Want Your Exact Number?
Every price above is where real quotes start, but your car gets its own number, based on your vehicle, your symptom, and your address. It takes about thirty seconds to start: tell me the car and the symptom through the four-step form, or call or text (602) 806-9444: I answer 24/7, because cars don’t check business hours before they break.
You’ll get the quote in writing before I pick up a single tool. If you like it, we schedule. If you don’t, you’ve lost nothing but a text message. That’s the whole policy, and it’s why most of my work comes from the same driveways, twice.
